Dead calm — the surface is a mirror. Fish see everything: long leaders, small flies, stay off the skyline.

Seasonal notes

Barr Lake State Park sits at the far northeast edge of the Denver metro near Brighton, and it's a fishery that rewards anglers willing to make the trip out of the mountains and into the prairie. The 1,900-acre reservoir is renowned primarily as a migratory bird sanctuary — bald eagles nest here every winter — but the fishing is legitimately good. Rainbow trout are stocked in fall and spring; the real draw for serious warm-water anglers is the walleye and wiper (white bass-striped bass hybrid) population, which has built up to impressive sizes over the years. Boat-fishing the deeper water off the north dam in early morning produces walleye; surface action on wipers can be explosive in June when shad are concentrated. The eastern nature boardwalk is for wildlife viewing only — no fishing from it.

Special regulations

Barr Lake State Park requires a Colorado State Parks pass or daily fee in addition to a Colorado state fishing license. A no-wake boating zone applies through most of the lake, with gas motors allowed under the no-wake rule. The eastern third of the lake (the wildlife sanctuary) is closed to boating; fishing from the shore on the wildlife-area side is also restricted seasonally. Check current CPW regulations for wiper and walleye size limits.
