Seasonal notes

Aurora Reservoir is a City of Aurora drinking-water storage reservoir that doubles as one of the metro area's premier stillwater trout fisheries and a designated tiger muskie lake. The reservoir sits at 5,700 feet on the eastern prairie edge of the metro area, which means less tree cover and more wind exposure than the mountain-front reservoirs — bring a bead-head streamer rig and count on being pushed around. Rainbow trout are stocked regularly throughout the spring and fall seasons, and the muskie population provides a year-round trophy opportunity for pike anglers willing to throw big flies. The reservoir is electric-motors-only, so it's remarkably quiet for a metro fishery. A small but dedicated fly-fishing community has developed streamer and chironomid stillwater techniques that work well here from kayaks and pontoon boats.

Special regulations

A City of Aurora Reservoir permit is required in addition to a Colorado state fishing license. The reservoir is accessible to Aurora residents and the public with a daily or annual permit — permits are available online and at the entrance. No gas motors; electric trolling motors and non-motorized watercraft allowed. Tiger muskie regulations: check the CPW brochure for current size and possession limits, as muskie fisheries have specific rules distinct from standard trout.
